The lining of the |nose| and |mouth| is made up of the |mucous membrane|. Mucus is the fluid secreted from small |glands| within the |mucous membranes|. The lining is kept moist from the mucus and warm from ~blood~ flowing just under it. The nasal secretions contain, among other substances, immunoglobulin, or lysozyme, an ~enzyme~ that destroys bacteria on contact. The ~mucous~ blanket in the |nose| travels approximately 5 to 10 millimeters per minute. It is replaced about every twenty minutes from the submucosal |glands|.
